Clean Gear Matters: What Fire Departments Should Know About PPE Cleaning

With updates to NFPA 1950, there are some important considerations when it comes to cleaning and maintaining firefighter PPE. While the changes may seem like small details, the right detergent, water, and wash temperature can make a big difference in how your gear is cared for.

🧼 Choose the right detergent
PPE cleaning requires more than your typical laundry detergent. The detergent pH should fall between 6.0 and 9.5 to help protect the specialized materials used in turnout gear.

💧 Pay attention to your water
Water hardness can affect how well detergent works. Water used for PPE laundering should be 60 ppm or less.

🌡️ Watch the temperature
Routine washing can be done at temperatures up to 120°F (49°C). Certain specialized decontamination processes may allow temperatures up to 140°F (60°C) when appropriate.
